Project Description

Mind Flip – A True Tale of Workplace Simulation

Brief

The People: Carl was one of the best salespeople we could bring to the table. He had the skills, he had the experience, and most of all he had the personality.

Gretchen, the Customer Service Director, was one of the toughest people internally we’ve ever had to deal with. She was a shareholder who couldn’t be fired but she should have been a football coach. Many sales people couldn’t deal with her, and she had told off the president and the owner in the past as well.

The Challenge:
Enabling the candidate to function to full capacity in a dysfunctional work environment while creating real workplace change for the client.

Our Solution: Workplace Simulation

We created a mock interview. Our Scenario: Gretchen just told off one of our client’s biggest customers, and Carl had gotten a call from his contact who was furious and thought his employee must have called the wrong company.

We told Gretchen, “Carl needs to learn to show more emotion,” and she replied “Don’t worry about that!”

We told Carl “We asked Gretchen to be as unreasonable as possible.”

In the interview, Gretchen immediately exploded on Carl. “Who do they think they are,” Gretchen shouted, “telling us we should take back the product after thirteen months? We only warrantied it for twelve. The nerve of these people!”

Calm as a Himalayan Priest, Carl responded, “Is that the best we can do for a valued customer?”

Gretchen kept raising her blood pressure, but Carl never lost his cool. Pre-heart attack, we stopped the interview and separated the two. Afterwards we asked Gretchen what she thought of Carl as a candidate.

”Well, something happened,” she said. “Will you excuse me?”

Where did Gretchen go? To a client emergency? For a cigarette break? To take a walk?

Something had shifted.

Gretchen wasn’t able to play her game any longer. Now she saw herself for the very first time. People can tell you that you have a problem, but until you see it yourself, you will never make a change, not even when loss of a job is at risk.

How was the client benefited by Workplace Simulation?

  1. Carl had proven to the client he had a great sales personality. Carl was hired and soon perceived as a superhero by his co-workers.
  2. Gretchen gave Carl a chance to prove himself and thereafter tried to give others a chance as well.
  3. Gretchen dropped the drama going forwards. Carl was able to see Gretchen in another light, rise about the rumors, and treat her with respect. Corporate dysfunction can come in many ways. Workplace Simulation took place. Change on both sides happened.
